Backing Out Of A Rental

April 6, 2019 by Rick Landuyt Leave a Comment

Q: i signed a lease and put down a security deposit on a rental and changed my mind about moving in. its been less than 48 hours. can i get my deposit back? what about my credit?

A: You should, as soon as possible, meet in person with the landlord or their agent. What you both ‘work out’ will be the answer. They could keep your deposit & hold you liable for the monthly payments on the lease, at least until it is leased out again. This is the ‘worst case scenario’. I doubt that your credit would ‘take a hit’ – unless they go to court & then report it to the credit agencies.
